What's Up With the Ending?
GIGI: Look, you made me a really nice offer. And a few months ago, no problem. But now everything is different, and you've changed that. And you can't change back. I want more.
Oops, make that VIVIAN. It's the ending of Pretty Woman. It's an easy enough mistake to make. That ending was totally ripped off from Gigi. Edward sees the light, just like Gaston, and comes through with the "more."
Gigi's ending, though clearly happy, can be a bit confusing because of how quickly things change and events unfold. Gigi says no then yes. Gaston says no then yes. Gigi shuts herself in her room. Gaston sulks in the park. Mamita and Alicia freak out. By the time they're on the same page and agree to marry, we don't know what hit us. We know Gigi and Gaston are in love, but will they find a way to make it work?
They do, because Gigi, in a burst of feminist self-respect, insists on her right not to be treated like an object, even a pampered one. Gaston sees the truth in this and offers her the whole enchilada.
We think that these constant reversals are pretty typical for any rom-com, pulling on the heart strings as viewers hope that the two lovers end up together in the end.
