Everything that is big, commandeering, and abrasive about Mom helps us to realize how small, insecure, and quiet Girl is. Mom takes up 51 phrases in "Girl"; Girl takes up two. Mom gives orders. Girl asks questions. They couldn't be farther apart.

But at the same time, this contrast makes us wonder if one day Mom was just like Girl, and if someday Girl will just turn into Mom. Who knows?
