Alice… or Whatever Her Name Is Timeline and Summary

  • Alice is depressed.
  • But yay—her family is moving across the country. She binge-diets in preparation for a glamorous new life.
  • They move, but her new school stinks and she doesn't make any friends.
  • She gets her parents to agree to send her back to Gran and Gramps for the summer.
  • Then, of course, she makes a friend: Beth.
  • Beth goes to summer camp, and it's the end of Alice's whole world.
  • At home, Jill invites her to a party.
  • The cool kids at the party spike her soda with LSD and she thinks it's just the bee's knees.
  • Bill, her "babysitter"/boyfriend gets her into speed and such. True love.
  • Alice loses her virginity to Bill during drug-fueled orgy.
  • Alice goes home, promptly finds a way to get the family doc to prescribe sleeping pills, then sets about abusing said sleeping pills.
  • She makes friends with Chris, who works at a sweet boutique and conveniently also has drugs.
  • Chris and Alice take up with Ted and Richie, drug lords extraordinaire; Alice sells drugs to kids.
  • Richie and Ted only have eyes for each other, though, and the girls are not pleased, so they run away to San Francisco.
  • They quickly give up on their plan to stay sober and enter the drug scene in San Fran with Chris's boss, Shelia.
  • Shelia and her beau, Rod, drug the girls and rape them.
  • The girls move to Berkeley and open their own boutique, which ends up being more of a hippie hang-out than a store.
  • Two days before Christmas, they call it quits and go home to their families.
  • Alice is making a great effort to stay clean and sober despite increasing pressure from her old druggie friends.
  • Chris is the first to cave, and gets Alice back on drugs. So much for willpower over peer-pressure…
  • Alice gets a new BFF, Lane, who can get her whatever drugs she wants.
  • Lane gets busted, then Alice and Chris get busted.
  • Her friend Jackie gives her drugs in English class, and the next thing she knows she has run away to Denver with the clothes on her back and twenty bucks. Good plan, Alice.
  • She ends up in Coos Bay—homeless, super sick, and just looking for her next fix.
  • She meets Doris, her latest BFF, in a shelter; Alice continues to get sicker.
  • Alice sees and does some pretty horrific stuff.
  • She decides to go home again, and her family is happy she's back.
  • Alice is on the up and up again.
  • Alice is bullied by her old druggie group, and can't seem to fit in with the "squares."
  • Gramps dies.
  • Gran moves in with Alice's family.
  • Alice meets Joel, good guy and Will Hunting caricature.
  • Alice has a confrontation with Jan (old drug friend) while babysitting, and Jan proceeds to start a smear campaign against her.
  • Gran dies.
  • Bullying continues.
  • Alice is hospitalized with a severe drug overdose/mental breakdown because someone (presumably Jan) planted peanuts spiked with LSD at the house where Alice was babysitting.
  • Alice gets moved to an insane asylum per court order.
  • She meets a bunch of different people and learns that she's had it pretty good all along.
  • Her dad gets Jan to retract her statement (the one that led to the court-ordered loony bin stint) and Alice gets to go home.
  • Alice makes new "square" friends who seem pretty cool.
  • Joel surprises her for her birthday.
  • Boom. She's dead from an overdose.
