Red Horse Timeline and Summary

  • Red Horse befriends the young, discontented Hrothulf shortly after the orphaned boy arrives at King Hrothgar's meadhall.
  • Red Horse recognizes the boy's unhappiness with his new, lesser rank, and he counsels him on how to start a revolution.
  • Hrothulf listens attentively to Red Horse and takes in most of what he says, but it's clear that Red Horse has more work to do if he's going to get Hrothulf to commit.
  • During a watered-down religious ceremony that no longer includes virgin sacrifices, Red Horse gives his opinion that "religion is sick" (128). Grendel has to agree with that.
  • By the end of the novel, Red Horse has faded out of the picture, but his theories remain. Grendel remembers the maxim "Violence is truth" as he considers meeting with Beowulf (157).
