Walter Burns (Cary Grant)’s Timeline and Summary
- Walter marries Hildy; she also works for him at the newspaper where he is the editor.
- She divorces him because he's a stinker. Walter really doesn't want her to go. She also leaves the paper. (Walter doesn't want her to do that either.)
- She leaves for four months, when she comes back she says she's engaged.
- Walter is trying to get a good story about the execution of Earl Williams; he asks Hildy to write it.
- Partly he needs a good writer on the story, but partly he wants to try to delay her marriage.
- Walter has his henchman, Louis, plant a watch on Bruce, getting him arrested.
- Hildy is going to quit because Walter double crosses her, but then Earl Williams escapes and she decides to pursue the story.
- Walter sends his henchwoman Evangeline to solicit him, landing Bruce in jail again.
- Hildy has spent Bruce's money to help her get a scoop on Earl Williams' escape; Walter sends her counterfeit money to replace it, figuring it will get Bruce in trouble again.
- Hildy captures Earl Williams in the pressroom; Walter goes there to help her.
- Walter manages to distract Hildy with dreams of a great scoop; when Bruce comes by, Hildy's so distracted that she lets him go to get the train without her.
- The sheriff and the mayor discover Earl hiding out, and arrest Hildy and Walter for obstructing justice.
- But it turns out that the mayor and sheriff had bribed a messenger to avoid having Earl pardoned. Walter and Hildy find out and are freed.

- Plus Hildy admits she loves him and they agree to remarry.
