• Bruce, an insurance salesman from Albany, gets engaged to marry Hildy.
• The day before their marriage, Bruce and Hildy meet Walter, Hildy's ex-boss. He convinces Hildy and Bruce that Hildy should cover the upcoming election of Earl Williams.
• Through various nefarious means, while Hildy is out reporting, Walter arranges for Bruce to get sent to jail by having Louis plant a watch on him.
• When Bruce gets out, Walter gets him put right back in, this time by sending Evangeline to solicit him. It's like a jack in the box.
• Walter also arranges for Bruce's mother to be kidnapped.
• Bruce is upset; he finally gets out of jail and demands Hildy leave for Albany with him.
• Hildy refuses, and Bruce storms off.
• Hildy finally realizes she loves Walter, not Bruce, and breaks the engagement. Walter lets Bruce out of jail (yes, he ended up back there one last time, this time for spending counterfeit money Walter gave to him.)
