- Hildy marries Walter and works for him at the newspaper.
- She divorces him because he's a stinker. She also leaves the paper.
- She takes four months off and meets Bruce Baldwin, an insurance salesman from Albany.
- They get engaged.
- Hildy goes to Walter to tell him of the engagement and that she's getting married the next day.
- Walter convinces her to come back to the paper for a day to cover the execution of Earl Williams, in return for taking out an expensive insurance policy with Bruce.
- Walter sets about delaying Bruce and Hildy's departure through various nefarious means.
- Hildy interviews Earl Williams.
- Meanwhile Walter gets Bruce thrown in jail.
- She starts to write the story for Walter, then realizes he is double crossing her and tears it up.
- She's about to leave, when she hears Earl Williams escaped, and decides to cover the story for Walter.
- The chase for Williams causes escalating chaos; Hildy finally encounters Earl in the pressroom, and hides him in a desk.
- Walter comes to the pressroom to help move the desk out.
- Walter distracts Hildy with dreams of a great story, and manages to get her to ignore Bruce when he shows up and declares he's leaving for Albany without her.
- Earl is recaptured. Hildy and Walter are almost arrested for obstructing justice.
