Evil Empire Speech: Things Aren't All Bad (Lines 88-110) Summary

Family Values, American Values

  • Hold on a second! It's not all bad—traditional American values are not all lost. Many people still assign great importance to family and religion. But all these bad things need to be part of a national agenda.
  • Congress is openly talking about prayer and abortion, which is huge, and Americans need to take pride in that, as well as in the ability to address the evils of our past and overcome them.
  • Reagan talks about how important it is to denounce hate groups and follow the commandments: "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself."
  • But even with the bad stuff, Americans should still view themselves as citizens of a good and just nation, because the country has overcome so much, and helped other countries do the same.
