The Narrator Timeline and Summary

At the age of nineteen, the narrator gives birth to Emily. The father leaves them shortly afterward.
The narrator takes one job after another, leaving Emily in the care of her neighbor. Finally, unable to support Emily, the narrator has to send her to live with her father's family for a couple of years.
The narrator remarries. Soon afterward, she has to send Emily to a convalescent home to recover from the red measles.
The narrator has more children and Emily helps her take care of them.
Years pass, and the narrator sees her daughter Emily, now a teenager, perform a comedy act onstage.
In the present time of the story, the narrator thinks over Emily's counselor's question.
