Character Role Analysis
Mac
Mac is both the brains and the brawn of the operation in this book, and Harry Nilson trusts that he will show Jim the ropes. Mac takes his role seriously, paying close attention to Jim's lack of experience, filling in his knowledge gaps, and protecting him whenever possible.
Mac does a good job driving home Party ideology: Jim wholeheartedly embraces the idea of the bigger picture, that one life is far less important than the greater good. Perhaps Mac does too good a job imparting this knowledge, as Jim loses whatever's left of his compassion mighty quickly.
