Character Role Analysis

Dedé

While all of the girls get to take their turn narrating and therefore being the protagonists of their chapters, Dedé is really the bookending character in the novel. She's the one who survives, and who therefore lives to tell the tale of her sisters' deaths. In a way, that survival is the most important action in the novel because it reflects all of society that lived through the Trujillo regime.
