Mabel

Though it seems unlikely when she throws punches Shirley's way, Mabel ends up bringing our main girl into the fold at P.S. 8. When Shirley doesn't rat Mabel out, the girl ends up considering Shirley a cool kid, inviting Shirley to play stickball with her and looking out for her at school. She takes Shirley under her wing, bringing her onto her stickball team and teaching her to skate. Now Shirley's got the biggest girl in the fifth grade on her side and finally has a friend. It might have started as two black eyes, but it's a win-win in the end.
