Lilia Timeline and Summary

In the fall of 1971, when Lilia is ten, a man called Mr. Pirzada starts coming to her house for dinner and TV.
She learns that he's Bangladeshi, not Indian, because of the 1947 Partition of India and that his wife and seven daughters are caught in the middle of the Bangladesh/East Pakistan civil war.
Because Mr. Pirzada is so nice to her and gives her candy each night he visits (which she saves in a special box), Lilia starts to learn—on her own—about the histories of Bangladesh and India.
On Halloween, Mr. Pirzada helps carve pumpkins and offers to make sure that Lilia and her friend are safe while trick-or-treating although her mom says it's not necessary.
Mr. Pirzada eventually returns to Dacca and reunites happily with his family.
Lilia, torn up by his absence, throws away all her Halloween candy, which we learn she'd been eating piece by piece every night for the sake of his family.
