- The Captain stays with the Bradshaws for three days, and Grandma is not happy about it, not one little bit.
- While Louise and Caroline are cleaning out the kitchen cupboards, Grandma hurls insults at Louise. She can see that the heathen Captain is tempting a weak little girl's mind.
- Louise has the urge to hurl a jar of vegetables at her, but she can also see that she's right: she is drawn to the Captain, and she knows it's not right. Oh man, Louise wonders, is she going to end up burning in hell for all of the evil thoughts she's been having lately?
- The Captain comes back to the house that evening and announces that he'll be staying at Auntie Braxton's house. After all, she's in the hospital and her house is just sitting there empty, plus he can fix it up for her.
- When school starts up again in the fall, Mr. Rice is gone.
- There are only about 20 students in the whole high school, and only six are freshmen like Louise, Caroline, and Call.
- School is pretty boring, so Louise decides to study people's hands. Caroline's tell the world how perfect and talented she is, while Call's indicate that he's not altogether a great person. Bummer.
- As for Louise's hands, they look pretty bad, which is why she buys some hand lotion and nail files to get them looking a little more feminine—a little more like Caroline's and the lady's in the Pond's ad.
- One afternoon, Louise comes into her room to see Caroline rubbing her lotion on her hands. Busted, Caroline says she didn't think Louise would mind.
- Caroline thought wrong, and Louise throws the bottle of lotion at Caroline, and it smashes on the wall behind her.
