• July 1773: Johnny is the most talented of Ephraim Lapham's apprentices. He shows Cilla Lapham the silver cup that proves his relationship to the Lyte family and badly burns his hand while making a silver sugar basin for John Hancock.
• August-September 1773: Johnny wanders around Boston, half-heartedly looking for a new trade now that he is unable to make silver items. He meets Rab and decides to present himself to Merchant Lyte.
• September 1773: Merchant Lyte accuses Johnny of stealing the silver cup, and Johnny stands trial. He is acquitted through the combined efforts of Rab, Cilla, and Josiah Quincy.
• September-November 1773: Johnny becomes a rider for the Boston Observer and moves in over the printer's shop with Rab. He also becomes heavily involved in Whig politics and learns of the group called the Boston Observers.
• December 1773: Johnny participates in the Boston Tea Party.
• June-July 1774: Johnny continues to work for the Whig cause and has many interactions with the British troops occupying Boston. He discovers that Cilla and Isannah are living with the Lytes and that the Lytes will be attacked while at their country house in Milton.
• August 1774: Johnny helps Cilla close up the Lytes's country house and discovers the truth of his relationship to the Lytes. He attends the final meeting of the Boston Observers.
• Autumn 1774: Johnny encounters Dove at the Afric Queen's stables and befriends him in order to get information about the British.
• March 1775: Johnny gets a musket for Rab from a British deserter and then witnesses the deserter's execution.
• April 14-15, 1775: Johnny hears rumors about British troops getting ready to move out of Boston.
• April 16, 1775: Johnny refuses to say goodbye to Rab when Rab leaves the city to join the militia in Lexington.
• April 18, 1775: Johnny gets information from Dove and carries it to Doctor Warren and Paul Revere. Revere sends him to give a message to the sexton of Christ Church to hang two lanterns in the belfry, since the British are going to move out of Boston by sea.
• April 19, 1775: Johnny wakes up in Doctor Warren's surgery. The shooting has started on Lexington Green, and Doctor Warren asks Johnny to gather information around Boston during the day and then slip over to the mainland to find him and report; Johnny spends the day gathering information. When he goes to the Lytes' house to disguise himself in Pumpkin's uniform, Lavinia Lyte tells him the story of his parents and birth. Johnny kisses Cilla and leaves, then he slips over to Charlestown, looking for Warren.
• April 20, 1775: Johnny goes to Cambridge, still tracking Warren and wondering if he can find Rab; he is sent on to Lexington, where he finds Doctor Warren and a dying Rab. Rab bequeaths his musket to Johnny. After Rab dies, Doctor Warren offers to operate on Johnny's hand, and Johnny agrees to the operation. As he waits for Doctor Warren to prepare his instruments, he walks on Lexington Green and understands what the rebellion is about.
