Day Timeline and Summary
MoreDay Timeline and Summary
- Day starts off by checking up on his family regularly because they live in the poor sector where the plague hits residents the most. He's actually on the run from the government and has been from the age of ten.
- To his dismay, he sees that the soldiers mark his family's door with a weird double crossed X—meaning that someone inside has the plague.
- He talks to the only person in his family who knows he's alive, his brother John. John tells him that Eden, their youngest brother, is the one who's sick.
- When Day gets back to where he's staying with Tess, a fellow street scavenger and his sidekick, he says that they can't leave anytime soon because he needs to keep a close eye on his family and especially on Eden.
- Day comes up with a plan to break into the hospital and steal plague cures for Eden. To do so, he disguises his identity and comes into the hospital pretending to be sick.
- While no one is looking, he rushes up the stairs and takes the lab hostage. Unfortunately the lab has completely run out of plague cures though, so he's forced to take off with just plague suppressants and try to escape, but is seriously injured by the soldiers guarding the hospital.
- He's stopped by a military captain. To escape, he throws a knife at the man's shoulder to wound him and then disappears down the gutters. He passes out.
- When Day comes to, he's in some random man's house—Tess has found someone to take them in.
- They have to leave right away though, because someone is going around asking about a person who was injured trying to get plague cures. It's obviously government officials after Day.
- Day still needs plague cures though, so he starts to ask around. A pretty bartender named Kaede tells him where the person with plague cures says he'll be.
- Day goes there to get some more information out of the person—who is June in disguise—and accidentally gives away from his speech that he's from the Lake sector.
- He and Tess go to a Skiz fight to make bets and try to win the rest of the money to buy plague cures. Unfortunately Tess almost gets pulled into a fight with Kaede—but a mysterious girl comes out of nowhere and saves her.
- The girl fights and gets injured because Kaede pulls a knife on her; because Tess is so grateful, she and Day end up taking the girl in and letting her stay with them.
- Day and the girl (who remains unnamed) form a friendship and even start developing an attraction for each other. One night, Day gets a little drunk on wine and kisses her.
- The next day the girl tells him that she saw soldiers coming to get his family. He rushes over to save his family before realizing that it was all a trick—the girl works for the Republic.
- Day's mother is shot in the head, his brothers are taken into custody, and he's taken in to be interrogated by Commander Jameson, a soldier named Thomas, and June (the girl).
- Even though Day is grief-stricken and furious, he still comes to feel sorry for June, who acted because she thought he had killed her brother. When he tells her that he didn't do it, he sees doubt flicker over her face.
- Day is sentenced to execution by firing squad, and June is supposed to be the one that keeps an eye on him. During this time, they grow strangely closer as she apologizes for what happened to his mother and he tells her again and again that he wouldn't kill her brother.
- One day Day tries to escape but fails. When he's caught, June hits him across the face with a rifle in front of the Commander, but leans in to whisper that she'll help him escape. He's shocked.
- Day's execution date is moved up without anyone knowing—especially June. She has to help him escape at the last minute with the help of the Patriots.
- As they're running it becomes clear that they won't be able to escape in time. John, who looks a lot like Day, takes Day's blindfold and identification and pretends to be him.
- Day and June escape while John stays behind and is executed by firing squad in place of Day. The Republic reports that they've killed Day, but it's certainly not true.
- Afterward, Day and June decide that they'll go to the waterfront to save Eden, and from there they'll cross the border and join the Colonies.
