Leviticus Morality and Ethics Quotes

How we cite our quotes: (Chapter:Verse)

Quote #4

The lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. (NRSV 19:1-2)

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the Lord your God am holy. (KJV 19:1-2)

These verses are the beginning of what many scholars call "the Holiness Code." The reason: chapters 19 through 26 use the word "holy" a whole lot. Whether this proves that a different person wrote this section is a subject for debate, but one thing is certain: sometimes it really doesn't take a whole lot of smarts to come up with a scholarly theory.

Quote #5

You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord. (NRSV 19:18)

Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord. (KJV 19:18)

Many people think that it was Jesus who first came up with the Golden Rule, "love thy neighbor as thyself." If a biblical Cliff Clavin tells you that, remember the traditional response: "Leviticus did it! Leviticus did it!"

Quote #6

You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard. You shall not make any gashes in your flesh for the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord. (NRSV 19:27-28)

Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard. Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord. (KJV 19:27-28)

Here's another verse guaranteed to make you popular on Reddit's atheism forum. This verse also provides incontrovertible proof that even God thinks hipsters are annoying.
