• Christine arrives at the Welches' weekend party with Bertrand, the insufferable, egotistical artist.
• Jim is instantly infatuated, but Christine stays by Bertrand's side.
• While Jim's trying hide the evidence of burning Mrs. Welch's bed sheets, he asks Christine for help out of desperation.
• Christine helps him out and seems to enjoy being in on the secret. Does Jim have her all wrong?
• Christine calls Jim to ask him whether he knows if Bertrand is going to the university Summer Ball. She ends up getting Jim to call Bertrand, then lies to Bertrand about it when he asks her.
• Christine shows up at the Summer Ball on Bertrand's arm but ends up leaving with Jim.
• During the taxi ride back to the Welches' house, Christine reveals her insecurities and lack of experience with men.
• She confesses her ambivalence about the relationship with Bertrand.
