The Major's brother, Bertie, dies, and the Major finds out via phone call.
Mrs. Ali, the town shopkeeper, helps soothe the Major's grief, and she transports him to the funeral a few days later.
The Major is startled to learn that Bertie's family, and even the Major's own son, Roger, want to sell the family heirlooms—a pair of hunting guns.
Meanwhile, the Major helps Grace and Mrs. Ali plan the village dance, and he grows closer to Mrs. Ali in the process.
Pretending he will offer the guns to Ferguson, an American land developer, the Major convinces Bertie's widow to give him her gun so that he can restore it.
The Major also helps Roger and his girlfriend, Sandy, find a cottage in the countryside.
When the day of the dance arrives, the Major inadvertently offends Mrs. Ali, who leaves town.
The Major leans on Grace for support, even inviting her to Christmas dinner. But Sandy breaks up with Roger on Christmas Eve, and Roger doesn't even stay for Christmas. Lame.
Thinking he loves Grace, the Major proposes to her, but she declines.
Grace gives the Major Mrs. Ali's address, and he saves Mrs. Ali from her brother-in-law's family.
The Major and Mrs. Ali make love in a cabin, but when they return, Abdul Wahid is missing.
Actually, Abdul Wahid is suicidal on a cliff, so the Major talks him down… but is accidentally shot, by his own gun, in the process.
When he recovers, the Major proposes to Mrs. Ali, and they get hitched.
