• Ky's hanging out with his old crew at free rec time. He hasn't seen them in a while because he's now working full time in nutrition disposal—a thankless job.
• Ky and his friends watch a movie on the Society; during a scene with barren lands and aircraft shooting people from the sky, Ky starts crying.
• On the first day of hiking, Ky sees Cassia sneak off and read a piece of paper. He offers to help her get rid of it.
• Ky is at music free rec with Xander, Cassia, and Em. When Em has an anxiety attack, he hurriedly tells Xander to give her his green pill—Ky has no pills since he's an Aberration.
• Ky gives Cassia a secret in exchange for hers—he knows how to write. He offers to teach her.
• On their next hike, Ky slips Cassia a napkin with a drawing, sharing a bit of his own story.
• Ky continues to give her these and also lets her borrow his artifact, a compass.
• After the raid, Ky learns that his compass is buried under his flowerbeds.
• Ky plays a game of chance with Xander—they tie.
• Then Ky plays a game of skill with Xander, and appears to be winning until Xander overtakes him—Ky meets Cassia's gaze when he throws the game with his final move.

• Ky confesses to Cassia that the Officials told him he was mistakenly placed in the Matching Pool, and that if he weren't an Aberration, she would be his Match.
• Ky and Cassia exchange gifts, knowing their time together is limited—he gives her his compass and receives her dress scrap.
• Placed into a group by Cassia, Ky is taken away by the Officials.
