• The Official tells Cassia she knows about the microchip glitch, and someone must have played a cruel joke—Ky's an Aberration, so he's not eligible for the Matching Pool.
• The Official calls Cassia out of class with good and bad news. The good—she got the highest score of the year on the sorting test, and every department wants her to work for them. The bad—they know about her feelings for Ky.
• The Official warns Cassia to stay away from him or else they'll send him back to the Outer Provinces, knowing Cassia does not want to risk his life.
• The Official mocks their relationship, telling Cassia it happens all the time.
• The Official appears in one of Ky's drawings—turns out she's the one who took him from the Outer Provinces.
• The Official sees Cassia stomp her red tablet into the ground instead of taking it, but says nothing—she wants Cassia to remember what she's done.
• The Official meets Cassia outside a museum. She tells her it was all an experiment, that Ky was placed in the Matching Pool to see what Ky and Cassia would do. It all went as predicted, and they know what Cassia will do next. Unfortunately, she's not a great liar—this wasn't deliberate, and maybe they don't actually know.
