Guide Mentor
Character Role Analysis
The Chaplain
The chaplain might not be Mother Courage's best mentor, but he does accompany her for a while and gives her advice along the way. He tells her that the war will likely keep on going forever, and convinces her to stock up on supplies while prices are low. Then, when the Swedish king is killed and peace is briefly declared, she fears her business will be ruined. The chaplain disappears.
The Cook
The cook takes the chaplain's place as Mother Courage's companion and mentor in the last part of the play. He offers to bring her to Utrecht (in the Netherlands) to run an inn that he inherits from his mother. He tries to convince her to join him and leave Kattrin behind.
