The Narrator

We follow the narrator from beginning to end and the story mainly centers on his activities. At times, he appears too passive to be the hero, and the black ship follows a quest that involves him only by accident. Even so, the adventures are his and we root for his survival, making him (for better or for worse) the story's protagonist.
