Karen (Meryl Streep)’s Timeline and Summary

Karen enters into a marriage of convenience with Bror, then moves to Africa with him to run a dairy farm, which turns out to be a coffee plantation.
Bror goes off and she gets settled, eventually heading off for a ride across the plains.
She meets Denys Finch Hatton.
The war starts and Bror goes off again, while Karen takes care of the farm and runs supplies to the war front.
She learns she has syphilis, and it's back to Denmark for scary arsenic-based treatment while Bror runs the farm.
She comes back later, with Africa turning modern (Bror picks her up in an automobile).
She builds a school for the natives, which Denys doesn't like. She ain't gonna budge, though.
She finds a woman's underwear in the car, and finally kicks her philandering husband out the door.
She gets on with her life, and strikes up a friendship-but-we're-kinda-giving-each-other-the-sexy-eye with Denys
She goes with him on safari, and it's just about the most romantic thing ever.
Bror shows up and asks for a divorce as her romance with Denys gets steamier.
Denys is swell, but he won't commit and she doesn't like it.
She finally kicks him out, right before the plantation catches fire.
With nothing left, she resolves to sell her stuff and go back to Denmark.
Denys returns for one last dance, then flies away.
She sells her stuff after being told that Denys was killed in a plane crash.
She mourns him over his grave, then heads back to Denmark.
