  • Karen enters into a marriage of convenience with Bror, then moves to Africa with him to run a dairy farm, which turns out to be a coffee plantation.
  • Bror goes off and she gets settled, eventually heading off for a ride across the plains.
  • She meets Denys Finch Hatton.
  • The war starts and Bror goes off again, while Karen takes care of the farm and runs supplies to the war front.
