Our title is "Petit, the Poet." Now, you don't have to have read any of the Spoon River Anthology to understand the full significance of this title—but it helps (just sayin'). That's because, if you had read the Anthology, then you would know that a favorite titling technique of the Masters in his book is to use the name of the character who is speaking in that poem. So, we get poems from Hod Putt… called "Hod Putt," or from Doc Hill called… "Doc Hill." (We swear we're not making these names up.) In this case, our speaker is Petit, a poet, so our title is—wait for it—"Petit the Poet." We say a whole lot more about poor Petit over in our "Speaker" section. For now, though, just know that our title is letting us know who is speaking to us in the poem (speaking to us, that is, from beyond the grave... oooooo!).
