Westley

The movie may be called The Princess Bride, but it's all about Westley's journey. If it were Buttercup's story, it would mostly be about hanging out in a castle and waiting for your wedding night. Sounds more like a Samuel Beckett play.

But yeah, it's Westley we follow as he rescues Buttercup from Vizzini and his thugs, gets her through the Fire Swamp, beats death, befriends Vizzini's thugs, and ultimately saves his beloved from Humperdinck. It doesn't get any more protagonist-y than that.
