  • Coalhouse Walker, Jr. arrives at a white upper-class family's home in New Rochelle, hoping to speak to Sarah, the mother of his child.
  • Sarah refuses to see him, but Coalhouse continues to come to the house every Sunday, eventually taking tea with the family and playing Ragtime music on the piano for them.
  • One Sunday Sarah decides to see Coalhouse. They go off on a drive in his new automobile and he proposes. She accepts.
  • On the way home from another visit to Sarah, Coalhouse is detained by the Emerald Isle Volunteer Fire House and told he has to pay a toll before he and his car will be allowed to pass. Coalhouse refuses and his car is vandalized.
  • Coalhouse seek restitution for the car but is refused. He tells Sarah he won't marry her until his car returned as good as new and the Fire Chief apologizes.
  • After Sarah is killed trying to get justice for Coalhouse, he creates a gang and destroys two firehouses, while killing numerous police and firemen.
  • With his gang, Coalhouse takes over the J.P. Morgan Library, where he holds its contents for ransom in exchange for the Fire Chief and his car. The car is restored by the Fire Chief in front of the library and the gang—except for Coalhouse—are allowed to leave.
  • After negotiating with both Booker T. Washington and Father, Coalhouse leaves the library and is gunned down by the police.
