Murdoch McIlvane

The moment that Matthew first sees Murdoch McIlvane, he knows that he wants to know this man. And that proves to be a good instinct, because Murdoch goes on to become Matthew's mentor. He knows what Matthew has been through since he comes from an abusive family, too, and because of this, Murdoch is uniquely positioned to help Matthew make the right decisions. Plus, dude has serious compassion for Matthew's situation.

This is why he doesn't just turn his back when the kids ask him for help, and instead immediately steps in to get them out of their bad home situation, and to provide them with the moral support that they so desperately need.
