Brain Snacks: Tasty Tidbits of Knowledge
In the first edition of his 1987 biography of Oscar Wilde, Richard Ellmann included a picture of a dude dressed as Salomé with the caption "Wilde in Costume as Salome." The photograph actually shows the Hungarian actress Alice Guszalewicz. Oops. (Source)
According to Richard Ellmann's biography, Wilde thought of calling the play The Decapitation of Salome. It was totally different: in this version Salomé goes off into the desert and lives as the prophet had. When Jesus passes her by, she comes to accept the Word of God. Still feeling unworthy, she walks the earth spreading the Word, until she falls through the ice while crossing a lake and is, herself, decapitated. (Ellmann, 345)
Although Salomé was first translated into English by Wilde's lover Lord Alfred Douglas, Wilde was not pleased with it. (Source)
