Character Analysis
Direct Characterization
The characters in Sarah, Plain and Tall are described directly through the eyes of Anna—and she turns out to be a pretty astute observer of character. She describes Sarah as plain and tall (shocking, we know), but also recognizes her independent streak and the moments in which she's sad about missing the sea. She describes Maggie as someone who laughs a lot, showing how Maggie has brought joy and happiness to her own little family on the prairie. And Anna showcases her father as a good, hardworking man and a devoted father—a.k.a. exactly what he is.
Family Life
The ways in which people treat family members reveals a lot about the characters in Sarah, Plain and Tall. Even though Anna is just a kid herself, she takes on responsibility for caring for her little brother, and it's clear through her actions that Anna is responsible, caring, and patient. You go, girl.
Although Sarah isn't officially a member of the Witting family yet, she treats the children with kindness and love—and insists on helping Jacob with the farm activities and even with fixing the roof. It's clear she'll be an attentive mother and a great partner for Jacob if she decides to stay.
