Scylla
Scylla
Scylla is a big crazy sea monster. She's most famous for munching on some of Odysseus' crew when the hero cruised through the narrow strait where she makes her home. The giant whirlpool Charybdis is on the other side of the strait, so losing a few men to Scylla was the lesser of two evils. There are a lot of different opinions out there about what exactly Scylla looks like. Most say she has the upper body of a woman with a fishy tail and a ring of snarling dogs sprouting from her waist. Others say that she has six snake-like heads growing from her, too. Either way, not great. In later mythology, it's said that she was once a beautiful sea nymph and was turned into the hideous man-eating monster by the sea witch, Circe. Moral of the story: stay the Hades away from Circe.
