Character Role Analysis
The Bandits
The bandits don't have names, and in fact they're almost treated like a force of nature sometimes. They strike without warning and leave devastation in their wake, no different from a typhoon or an earthquake. We never learn their names, not even the chieftain's, and the peasants don't treat them any differently from any of the other calamities which presumably have befallen them.
The only difference here is that they can actually do something about the bandits. And despite a lot of whining and despairing, they manage to assemble a force tough enough to take them on. The entirety of the film focuses on defeating them and removing the fear of their return from the village. They may not have any real identity, but they're certainly the force in opposition to our scruffy septet of heroes.
