- Matt waits for Attean to invite him back to the village… but Attean is a no show. For days.
- Matt starts thinking maybe he wasn't such a winner after all.
- Attean finally shows up a week later, but he's super serious and not focused on the lesson or Matt or anything.
- Attean tells him the hunt is coming up, and that Saknis has been teaching him.
- Whew—Matt figures that must be why Attean stayed away so long, and is relieved to realize it's not because Attean thinks he's a loser.
- Attean tells Matt that before he can go on the hunt with the men, he has to find his "manitou." Uh, what is that? Matt thinks it might be another word for moose (he's wrong).
- Attean tells him that a manitou is a personal spirit that every Indian man must find—usually in a dream—and in order to find his, Attean will have to wash himself in a special way, head out to the forest, build a personal wigwam, refuse food, and pray until his manitou arrives.
- A manitou could be a bird or animal in a dream, or a voice speaking to him, but basically the idea is that Attean just has to be patient and wait for it.
- Matt is sad about the manitou thing. He doesn't get Attean's pull to find it, and he knows things will change when Attean becomes a man among his people.
- For the next few days, Matt thinks of Attean. He knows that if he doesn't find his manitou, Attean will feel shamed and worthless.
- Matt hopes he finds it, even if it squashes their friendship.
