Ilse Severensen

Character Analysis

Ilse has purchased strawberries from Fujiko for years. When the Imadas and other Japanese Americans are forced to leave San Piedro for internment camps, she sees off the boat that takes them from the island. She waves to Fujiko, but Fujiko refuses to acknowledge her (it appears she always resented the way Ilse viewed her as an exotic curiosity).
