Lakshmi

This one's a no brainer. It's Lakshmi's story, Lakshmi's narrative perspective, Lakshmi's journey—through and through, Lakshmi's our girl. We cry with her, we smile with her, and we feel her roller coaster ride of emotions. When she walks up to the Americans at the end of the book, we are so glad… and still worried about what will happen to her off the page. And that's one of the marks of a lasting protagonist.
