Character Role Analysis

Mr. Dark (and all the other carnival freaks)

No contest here. The freaks of the carnival thrive off of human fear and suffering. Not pleasant people. They're also hunting down Will and Jim, luring townspeople to forsake their real identities, and causing general mayhem and misery. You can also think about how Mr. Dark is locked in a struggle with our protagonist Will, fighting over Jim. Mr. Dark repeatedly lures Jim to the carnival; Will tries to prevent his friend from going. It's a classic tug-of-war, just like you used to play at recess (plus, you know, unspeakable evil all around).
