Exile

We know, we know, "exile" isn't a person, but it is the major force that acts against our hero and everyone and everything he loves. It's the villain that takes away Vladimir's sense of home. In a piece of nonfiction, a proper villain can be hard to find: almost no one is pure evil, and a careful autobiographer will make us feel at least a little empathy for everyone. So exile, it is.
