Antagonist
Character Role Analysis
The Steppenwolf
Wait a minute! But if the Steppenwolf is Harry, and Harry is the protagonist, then does that mean he's the antagonist too? How's that again? Yes, you heard right. Harry's biggest enemy is himself in the novel, and he sections off that enemy section of himself and calls it the Steppenwolf. Sort of the grown-up version of "it wasn't me, it was my imaginary friend!"
