• In Kuwait, Birdy meets his unit and is assigned to a squad with Marla, Jonesy, and Captain Coles.
• Birdy and his fellow soldiers are ordered into Iraq and start moving.
• They hit a sandstorm and have to take cover in their Humvee for two days.
• Birdy's unit goes to An Nasiriyah. They search a boy who owns an RGB launcher, and kill him when he tries to run.
• Birdy's squad picks up a prisoner in An Najaf and drops him off at a checkpoint.
• They ride into Baghdad just as the Iraq 5th Corps formally surrender.
• Birdy's unit travels to a village where children were killed in a bombing. They apologize to the mothers and give the village chief money.
• Birdy's squad travels to Ba'qubah to supposedly treat sick animals. They end of tending to children who were wounded by American marine gunfire, even though the villagers had shot first.
• On his way to a market with Marla and some marine, Birdy sees an IED go off, hitting a Humvee full of marines.

• Birdy opens the door to Pendleton's Humvee and finds him dead.
• Birdy's unit travels to Fallujah. They dine with a sheik and camp out in a hospital.
• On his way to the bathroom, Birdy encounters two Iraqis about to rape Miller. He shoots them, killing them both.
• Birdy and his peers are sent to a rest area. They relax for a few days, and then Birdy's squad is ordered to travel to a marshy area near Iran for secret business.
• Birdy's squad meets Captain Roberts, who tells them to travel to a chief and tell him they'll return his tribe's kidnapped children in exchange for IED detonators.
• They visit the chief and convince him to make the exchange. They get the children and drive back. Birdy receives the detonators from the chief's people.
• Jonesy runs to protect a child who is being shot at and Birdy runs after him. Birdy's leg is wounded.
• They return to Captain Roberts, where Birdy realizes Jonesy is dead.
• Birdy returns to camp and says goodbye to everyone in his unit. He writes his uncle a letter before going to Germany to have his leg treated.
