Anwell a.k.a. Gabriel Timeline and Summary

  • Gabriel is on his deathbed, thinking back on his life. Seems normal enough, except for the fact that Gabriel is only twenty and dying of some disease he doesn't tell us about. What's more? Some bones were just found in the woods that are making Gabriel nervous.
  • He tells us about growing up in a small town and meeting a boy named Finnigan when he was just nine or ten. Finnigan asks him to hold onto money he stole from Gabriel's mom, and eventually, Gabriel gets found out and spanked as a result.
  • Reeling from the money incident, Gabriel makes a pact with Finnigan: He will only do good, while Finnigan will do anything bad that Gabriel secretly wants done. So far, so good, right?
  • Finnigan starts proving his worth when he burns a local kid's bike and steals a teacher's cat. Gabriel wants to get revenge on people for being jerks to him, and Finnigan's always there to help… or, you know, hurt.
  • They share their deepest, darkest secrets, including Gabriel's about how his brother died. It happened when Gabriel was seven and taking care of his disabled brother, Vernon, while his dad was at church.
  • Since his mom had a migraine, he was worried Vernon would wake her by throwing one of his temper tantrums—so… he stuffed a cloth in his brother's mouth and jammed him in the fridge until his mom went to bed so Vernon wouldn't cause any problems.
  • Things didn't turn out so well, though, and Vernon died in the fridge; Gabriel feels guilty about it, even though Finnigan tells him not to.
  • Finnigan keeps lighting fires all over town, and people start to whisper about the arsonist causing trouble; Gabriel's dad even bands together with other vigilantes looking for the culprit.
  • Pretty soon, Gabriel becomes uncomfortable with the stuff that Finnigan's doing. Sure, it was cool getting his revenge at first, but now people are getting hurt. Plus, he's not sure everyone Finnigan hurts deserves it. When he confronts Finnigan about it, though, Finnigan simply says that this is the deal they made—deal with it.
  • After a while, Gabriel befriends a pretty girl at school named Evangeline. He's hoping it'll turn into something more than friends, but is too nervous to tell her.
  • Finnigan mocks Gabriel for spending so much time with Evangeline, and he warns Gabriel that he has to choose between them… or else.
  • Gabriel's dog, Surrender, gets into a neighbor's yard and kills a few goats, enraging the owner. When he demands Surrender be shot as a result, Gabriel's dad agrees, but Gabriel is torn between obeying his dad and protecting his dog.
  • He takes Surrender to the woods and gives him to Finnigan, but leaves his body behind so his dad can finish him off. This way he has the best of both worlds.
  • Gabriel rushes to Evangeline's place and warns her to get out of town. He's worried what Finnigan might do to her, but she's not sure what Gabriel's talking about.
  • Before he can even explain anything else, though, his mom shows up and drags him home.
  • He's ticked off at his parents, so goes all Lizzie Borden on them. (Not familiar: Lizzie Borden took an axe/And gave her mother forty whacks;/When she saw what she had done,/She gave her father forty-one.)
  • The next day, the constable shows up and takes him somewhere to rest; a couple years later, he's on his deathbed, forcing his body to give up.
  • Oh he doesn't have cancer or anything—nope, Gabriel's just trying to rid the world of Finnigan. He figures the only way to get rid of his evil alter ego is to kill himself. So he does.
