Peter Hatcher Timeline and Summary

  • At a party, Peter wins a pet turtle, whom he names Dribble. He warns Fudge to keep his hands off Dribble.
  • Peter has to deal with Fudge during a visit from one of his father's big customers, who dumps Mr. Hatcher as his advertiser because of Fudge's impossible behavior.
  • When Peter learns a new trick—standing on his head—Fudge is absolutely delighted and wants to do it, too.
  • This coincides with the time that Fudge refuses to eat, and Mrs. Hatcher begs Peter to stand on his head in front of Fudge so that he'll open his mouth and eat something.
  • Peter, Jimmy, and Sheila head over to the playground with Fudge and agree to watch him for a few minutes. Fudge jumps off the jungle gym, ends up losing some of his teeth, and Peter's mom blames him.
  • Peter's dragged along on a dentist appointment with Fudge, and then has to go shoe shopping with his mom afterwards.
  • After Peter and his friend Jimmy spend weeks and weeks working on a poster project, Fudge scribbles all over it.
  • Peter finally is allowed to get a chain-lock for his room to keep Fudge out of his stuff.
  • One weekend, Mrs. Hatcher goes out of town and so Peter and Fudge are left in the care of their father. He takes them to work, and Peter is super jealous that Fudge gets to be in a commercial.
  • Peter comes home one day to find the chain lock on his door undone, and when he investigates, Dribble is gone. Fudge says he's swallowed him.
  • Peter has to stay at home while his parents rush Fudge to the hospital, and he feels forgotten and overlooked, like his parents care more about Fudge than the fact that Peter just lost a beloved pet.
  • In the end though, Peter's parents come home and tell him that they know he's gone through a lot and that they're proud of him for keeping his chin up and being so responsible.
  • So Peter gets a present: a puppy. He names the puppy Turtle, after his lost Dribble.
