Antagonist
Character Role Analysis
Beth Shoemaker
While you could make a case for the fact that Tales from the Madman Underground is Karl Shoemaker versus the World, at its core, the story is a classic conflict between parent and child. In this case, the biggest struggle Karl faces is the battle he's fighting against his mom for his money, livelihood, and pretty much his whole life. If the antagonist is the person who stands in the way of what the protagonist wants, Beth is definitely not making her son's life any easier.
Want to find out why? Mosey on over to Beth's page in the "Characters" section. We talk plenty of smack about her over there.
