Jim Pocock Timeline and Summary

Jim shows up in Paris with his overbearing wife Sarah and his sister, Mamie.
The moment he's alone with Strether, Jim expresses his envy for the fact that Strether has been able to get away from the Newsome family and enjoy Paris for so long on his own.
Strether tells Jim about how he's intentionally been keeping Chad in Paris to prolong his trip, and Jimmy is way into it.
In fact, this hubby on the loose says that he's totally down for Chad to stay in Paris forever, if he so desires. He thinks that's great if the young fella still has a chance to escape the clutches of the Newsomes.
Jim himself, tragically, is resigned to his fate as Sarah's husband.
Lucky for him, Sarah wants to spend a lot of alone time with Chad, so Jim is thrilled for the opportunity to run around Paris by himself and have some adventures.
He also doesn't seem to care one bit that Sarah is spending more and more of her time going out for dinner—and to the circus, for crying out loud—with Waymarsh.
Jim eventually leaves Paris to head to Switzerland before going back to the States. It's clear that he has enjoyed his time in Paris, but unlike Strether or Chad, he succumbs to the need to go back to his boring life in Woollett. Hey, at least he'll get to run the Newsomes' business.
