Get out the microscope, because we’re going through this poem line-by-line.
Lines 85-90
"We two will lie i' the shadow of
That living mystic tree
Within whose secret growth the Dove
Is sometimes felt to be,
While every leaf that His plumes touch
Saith His Name audibly."
- The damsel continues to fantasize here. Now she and her loved will be lying under a "living mystic tree" (86). This is a reference to the Biblical description of the tree of life.
- In that tree, the young woman tells us, the Dove—a Christian symbol of God or the Holy Spirit—"Is sometimes felt to be" (88).
- When the tree of life senses this holy presence, its every leaf declares the name of God.
- In short: this reunited couple fantasy has them enjoying a picnic under a tree that represents the greatness of God.
