- Edmund flees his master's house but is grabbed and brought to the sheriff, who passes him off to Sir Nigel.

- Before they leave for the Holy Land, Edmund tries to run away with some of Nigel's money, but he is brought back.
- Edmund travels through London, France, and Venice to get to the Holy Land.
- In Venice, he gets drunk with Hubert and ends up robbing the Doge's nephew. Nigel's men find him and drag him back to the ship, where he is punished with manual labor.
