Soapy Timeline and Summary

  • Soapy realizes winter is coming. He decides to get arrested so he can spend the winter in jail.
  • He tries to get into a fancy restaurant so he can dine, try to dash, and then get arrested for not being able to pay the bill. But the waiter doesn't even let him through the door.
  • Next, Soapy breaks a shop window with a rock. Since he doesn't run away, the cop doesn't believe Soapy is the one who broke it.
  • Soapy finds a cheaper restaurant and has a nice meal. When he confesses he has no cash, the waiters refuse to call the cops on him and toss him onto the sidewalk instead.
  • After this, Soapy pretends to sexually harass a woman, right in front of a policeman. When the woman grabs his arm and agrees to take him up on his offer, the policeman wanders away.
  • Soapy then tries to act like a madman by yelling in the street. The watching policeman thinks he's a drunken college man and leaves him alone.
  • Finally, Soapy steals an umbrella from a man. The man doesn't want any trouble, though, so once again Soapy doesn't get arrested.
  • As he's heading back to his bench in the park, Soapy hears an anthem, a religious hymn, being played on an organ coming from a small church.
  • The music, the moon, and the quiet street make Soapy see that his current life is not anyway to live. He plans to get a job and start to live a good life again, one that includes family, friends, and church.
  • Soapy feels the long arm of the law on his shoulder. A policeman arrests him for vagrancy, or not having a residence or means of support.
  • The next morning Soapy is sentenced to three months in jail.
