Buster Kilrain

Kilrain is Chamberlain's pal, but he's got a fairly different worldview. While Chamberlain is a professor of rhetoric with a fairly normal family background, Kilrain is an Irish immigrant who doesn't know who his father was. He also has a more cynical way of looking at things—he bounces different ideas off Chamberlain and helps shine light on the motives of different soldiers fighting for the Union cause.
