Robert E. Lee Timeline and Summary
MoreRobert E. Lee Timeline and Summary
- Lee receives news from Harrison and Longstreet that the Union Army is really close. On the first day of battle, the Confederates accidentally end up engaging the Union Army—and basically come out on top.
- However, Lee is irritated when two of his generals, Ewell and Early, set the South up for defeat by letting the Union take the high ground.
- Lee orders Longstreet to assault the Union position, attempting to take over the important hill of Little Round Top… but it doesn't work. Lee's judgment seems to be clouded by the heart problems he's been having lately.
- On the night before the third day, Longstreet argues with Lee when Lee orders him to attack the center of the Union line.
- When Longstreet tries to argue, Lee overrules him and sends the Confederates—with General Pickett's division out in front—headfirst into the Union Army, attacking high ground across open ground.
- The battle turns into a bloodbath for the Confederates. Lee personally rides through his retreating soldiers, telling them that it's all his fault, while also ordering them to form up again, as if there were still hope to turn this into a success.
- As the story ends, Lee seems to know that this is the beginning of the end for the Confederacy.
