• Todd is wandering in the swamp near Prentisstown when he hears the hole in the Noise.
• He returns home, only for Ben and Cillian to pack his bags and send him on his way.
• Todd meets Viola, who has been hiding out since her spaceship crashed, and the two of them set off running—away from Prentisstown, Aaron, and the army that's following them.
• Todd stays with Tam and Hildy, who help him get to Farbranch, where he'll be safe and able to catch a breath.
• The mayor of Farbranch puts him to work so that he can earn his keep. While working in a barn, he is threatened and attacked by Matthew Lyle, who is angry that someone from Prentisstown is in his town.
• Todd escapes Farbranch and Lyle just as the army is attacking.
• He comes across one of the legendary Spackles, or aliens, in the woods. Todd battles the Spackle and kills it, then shortly afterward, Aaron arrives on scene. He stabs Todd, knocking him unconscious, and takes Viola.
• Todd wakes up and is overcome with fever, but starts to look for Viola.
• He is rescued by Wilf and his wife, who load him onto their wagon and nurse him to health.
• Todd leaves his friends before the fever is gone, and starts hallucinating as he looks for Aaron and Viola.
• He finally finds the real Aaron and Viola and, with the help of Manchee, distracts Aaron for long enough to take Viola back; they get into a rowboat and Todd passes out.
• Todd wakes up in a bed days later in Carbonel Downs, where Doctor Snow is nursing him back to health.
• While walking outside of the settlement, Todd finds Ben, his foster father, hiding out. They are found and run out of town by Doctor Snow and his men.
• Todd and Viola leave Ben after a while and continue on their own to Haven.
• He and Viola are still running from Aaron, and hide in a church built in the side of a waterfall, which flows into Haven.
• Aaron finds them. He and Todd fight until Viola takes a knife and kills Aaron.
• On their way to Haven, they're stopped by the mayor's son. They get away but Viola is injured, so Todd carries her.
• Todd arrives in Haven and finds the city empty, with Mayor Prentiss waiting for him.
