Character Role Analysis
Mariane
Mariane and Cléante are in love, plain and simple. But this would be an awfully boring play if Molière didn't throw a wrench into their plan for marriage. And that wrench, ladies and gentlemen, goes by the name of Harpagon. The old man wants to marry Mariane himself, and Cléante spends the play trying to figure out a way of getting her away from him. Eventually, the young couple ends up together, leaving the cruel old miser to grow old and die with nothing but his money to keep him warm.
